Janmashtami is celebrated with a lot of rejoicing in different parts of India. The most extensive fervor of the festival is in Mathura but this is not the only place where Janmashtami celebrations can be seen.The festivities of Janmashtami with its different rituals are followed in various parts of India. The temples all over India engage in various ceremonies and prayers in honor of Lord Krishna.With the chanting of shlokas, readings from religious texts, singing devotional songs and dance performances, Janmashtami brings out an altogether different color.

Janmashtami in Mathura
The main Janmashtami celebrations in Mathura take place at the birth place that is now converted into a big temple known as Krishna Janma Bhoomi Mandir. On this day, devotees keep a day long fast and break it at midnight after the birth time of Lord Krishna. At midnight the idol of Lord Krishna is bathed with milk and curd and then rocked in a cradle. A popular belief is that if inhabitants make any wish while rocking the cradle then the wish will come true.

Along with Rasleela, Jhanki the most important feature of the Mathura Janmashtami celebrations are the Jhulanotsav and Ghatas. This can only be seen in Mathura City. During Jhulanotsav, Swings are put in courtyard of temples and houses to welcome Lord Krishna's birth. It symbolizes cradling of Lord Krishna. Ropes of swings are decorated with flowers to give a festive look.

Janmashtami in Vrindavan
Vrindavan is one of the most famous pilgrimage places of India. On Janmashtami the entire city is immersed in the spirit of devotion. The sound of bhajans and chanting, echoes through out the city. Rasleelas are also an important part of the celebrations in Vrindavan. Also the Janmashtami celebrations reach its peak in the most important temples of Vrindavan like Banke Bihari Temple, Rangnathji Temple, Shri krishna Balram Temple, Radharaman Temple, ISCKON Temple etc. These temples have a schedule for the entire day, with timings fixed for various ceremonies and poojas all day long.

Janmashtami celebrations at Madhuban are one of the important highlights of Vrindavan. It is said that Madhuban is the place where Lord Krishna performed rasleelas. It is also said that anyone who visits madhuban during night either dies or becomes insane. During Janmashtami this place becomes alive and different types of performances are held during daytime.

Janmashtami in Dwarka
Dwarka or the Golden city takes on a completely different look during the festival of Janmashtami. The celebration of Janmashtami in the main Dwarkadhish temple is very famous in India. Devotees of Lord Krishna from all over India crowd the city of Dwarka during Janamashtami. Rows of lights are lit everywhere, kirtans and bhajans are sung, sermons are delivered and Krishna is worshipped in his infant form. Lord Dwarkadhish is adorned with lot of Gold jewellery and other precious stones such as Diamonds and Topaz. After visiting the main temple, devotees go to Shankhoddhar Beyt. The splendor and grandeur of the Janmashtami celebrations is something that brings peace to the soul and fills our world with delight.
