Janmashtami Celebrations in Gokul

Janmashtami is also known as Krishnashtami or Gokulashtami. Lord Krishna was born in Mathura but was brought up in Gokul under the guidance of Yashoda and Nada. Janmashtami celebrations in Gokul are enjoyed for two days. In fact, various Hindu communities celebrate Janmashtami for two days. Legends have it that Lord Krishna was born at midnight so Vaishnavas celebrate the festival on the first day. Whereas Shaivyas celebrate it on the second day after midnight. Even the ISKCON celebrates Janmashtami on the second day i.e. the day after the birth of Lord Krishna.



Gokul is the most celebrated of Shri Krishna’s abode. The Janmashtami celebrations of Gokul marks the day full of Janmashtami pooja, ringing of bells, blowing of conches and organizing various cultural and religious events. The dawn of the Janmashtami day breaks with bathing in holy water and assembling of the pooja items. People observe Janmashtami fast and prepare special food for the fast known as ‘phalahaar’. While others enjoy delectable delicacies on the day.

People visit various temple situated in Gokul like Dwarika Nath and Balkrishna. They chant Sanskrit mantras in praise of the Lord and sing Lord Krishna bhajans till midnight. At midnight, the idol of the Lord is bathed with water of the River Ganges—the holy water, curd, buttermilk and honey. Then, the final puja is performed. The baby Krishna is rocked in the silver cradle the whole night. The striking feature of the Janmashtami celebration in Gokul is the procession of Janmashtami ‘jhankis’ or tableau.
