Janmashtami Aarti

Janmashtami aarti refers to fire rituals. It is believed that the custom of performing aarti has roots in Vedas that describe ‘homa’. During the ritual, a wick of cotton is soaked in pure ghee and lighted. Besides, camphor cubes are also lighted. The light is then offered to all the deities and during Janmashtami pooja (link to Janmashtami pooja), especially to Lord Krishna.

Indeed, the term aarti has a deep connotation and significance in Sanskrit. ‘Aa’ refers to ‘towards’ whereas ‘rati’ refers to ‘the highest love for God’ in many ways. Therefore, apart from fire rituals people also sing devotional songs. These are also described as Janmashtami aarti. Generally, Janmashtami aarti is performed when the entire Janmashtami pooja process has completed. The process involves circulating the aarti around an idol and sing different songs in praise of that Lord. Janmashtami aarti is same as other types of aarti.

On this day, however, emphasis is given on the pooja of Banke Bihari. Known as Deepa Aaradhanai in Tamil, the custom of aarti is followed in the whole of India. It is the culture of Indian society to perform aarti twice daily. And during Janmashtami, Janmashtami aarti is performed at midnight and devotional songs are sung.
