Janmashtami Midnight Pooja

Janmashtami midnight pooja is the essence of the entire Janmashtami festival. It is the center of attraction. People who observe fast the whole day, eat only after they have offered Janmashtami midnight pooja to the Lord. Besides others also eagerly wait and perform the pooja. Hence, the midnight Janmashtami pooja is a vital part of the celebration.
Janmashtami is the day of birth of Lord Krishna on this earth. People all over India celebrate this festival with pomp and gaiety. It is, indeed, one of the magnificent festivals of the country. The celebrations of Mathura and Vrindavan are worth watching. Breaking of ‘dahi pot or makhan handi’ is the major attraction in some parts of the nation. Besides, family gathering, Janmashtami ‘jhankis’, feasting, preparation of the Janmashtami pooja and organizing Janmashtami bhajan and kirtan are some of the general customs of the day.

People perform Janmashtami pooja at midnight. And the celebration goes on for two days. The first day is observed as the Krishnashtami and the next day is celebrated as Gokulashtami. Actually, the process of Janmashtami midnight pooja began because according to Hindu mythology, Lord Krishna was born at midnight amid lightening and thunderstorm. Legends have it that when Krishna was born, there was heavy downpour too.

Janmashtami midnight pooja consists of the Janmashtami pooja items, pooja thali, pooja aarti and the pooja process. Initially, the idol of Bal Gopal is decked up and placed on the pooja ‘sthan’ or place. Then the conches are blown in order to invoke all the gods and goddesses of the universe for the midnight pooja. Pujariji or the Brahmin performs the aarti and the devotees sing devotional songs.

All the temples during the midnight get filled with the sounds of bells and the echoes of ‘Hare Krishna’, ‘Jai Jai Krishna’ and ‘Girdhar Gopal’. Flowers are offers to the Lord and panchamrit is served to all. Besides, bhog or food is also offered to God. Rocking of the cradle of the baby Lord i.e. Lord Krishna is another important ceremony of the midnight Janmashtami celebration. It is believed that anyone making a wish while rocking the cradle is granted it.
