Christ and Krishna

“When an Indian person calls on Krishna, he often says, Krsta. Krsta is a Sanskrit word meaning attraction. So when we address God as Christ, Krsta, or Krishna we indicate the same all-attractive Supreme Personality of Godhead. When Jesus said, 'Our Father who art in heaven hallowed be Thy name', the name of God was Krsta or Krishna”.

--Remark by AC Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada [Founder Consciousness Movement (ISKCON)]

It is very difficult to come to a conclusion that Christ and Krishna are same or not. But it is true that there are some similarities in the name and teachings of Christ and Krishna—God of Hindus and the God of Christians. It is also remarked by the Shri Praphupada that Christ and Krishna are same heavenly beings. The word Christ has descended from the Greek word, ‘Christos’ meaning ‘anointed one’. Similarly, the word Krishna in Greek means ‘Christos’. Hence, there is an amazingly apparent similarity between the Hindu God ‘Krishna’ with that of Christian God ‘Christ’. Besides, According to the peopl of West Bengal, a state in India, Krishna can also be referred to as ‘Kristo’ which is similar to the Spanish version of Christ called ‘Cristo’.

The Hindus of India believe that Jesus Christ was also another incarnation of God to reinforce righteousness on earth just like their God—Lord Krishna. Therefore, Christ and Krishna are akin to each other. Some of the similarities of Christ and Krishna are:

  • Both Christ and Krishna were saviors of mankind.
  • Both were ‘avatars’ of God who returned to earth during a critical time period.
  • Both Christ and Krishna were the incarnates of the Divine Being Himself in the human form
  • Both wanted to teach human beings divine love, divine power, divine wisdom, and wanted to lead the world towards the divine light of God.

Some of the other host of similarities and alikeness in Christ and Krishna are:

  • Both are sons of God, since they were divinely conceived
  • The birth of both Jesus Christ and Krishna were foretold or prophesized by heavenly voice.
  • Both were born at unusual places — Christ in a lowly manger and Krishna in a prison cell
  • Both were divinely saved from death pronouncements
  • Christ is often depicted as a shepherd; Krishna was a cowherd
  • Both died of wounds caused by sharp weapons — Christ by nails and Krishna by an arrow
  • The teachings of both are very similar — both emphasize love and peace.

123janmashtami.dgreetings.com offers you insight into the similarities between Christ and Krishna. People do not have any historical evidence, however, these similarities are simply hard to ignore!
